Uzbekistan: Bukhara and Samarkand Water Supply Project

The following project was approved today by the World Bank's Board.

LOAN/CREDIT AMOUNT: IBRD—$20 million, IDA - US$20 million equivalent
TERMS: Grace Period = 4 years; Maturity = 17 years
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The project, with an estimated total cost of about US$ 62 million, aims to help improve the quality, reliability, efficiency, and financial sustainability of potable water supply services in Bukhara and Samarkand, two of Uzbekistan's largest and most historic cities. It consists of four components: (a) strategic rehabilitation and efficiency improvements of existing facilities; (b) institutional strengthening of the two cities' water utility agencies through a management contract with an international water utility operator; and (c) strengthening of their finances through improved financial management and commercial practices. In addition to the Bank's US$ 40 million loan and credit, the project will be financed by a US$ 9 million grant provided by Switzerland and by local currency contributions totaling US$ 13 million equivalent by the Uzbek authorities.
