Ends:   Aug 12, 2009 13:00

On August 10-12 negotiations on a proposed Fergana Valley Water Resource Management Project were held at the World Bank country office in Tashkent. The project cost is US$ 65,544,000 provided by IDA. The Uzbek delegation was led by Mr. Shavkat Khamraev, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and water resources. The IDA negotiations team was led by Ms.Mahwash Vasiq, Senior Water resource management and Agricultural development specialist ECSS1. Also, a number of World Bank experts took part in the negotiations being connected via video conference facilities. The negotiating parties signed the Agreed Minutes.

Development Objective of the Fergana Valley Water resource management Project is to improve agricultural production in areas affected by water-logging, and to reduce damage to housing and infrastructure from rising ground water levels and salinity in the project areas.  The objective would be achieved through the rehabilitation of the irrigation and drainage system and through institutional capacity building in sustainable water resources management and agricultural production.  It is expected that the Project implementation will lower the ground water table, increase in crop yields, and the reduction of land area flooded in settlements.
